You go Michelle!!

If you don't want to read one sentence past this click here to read Michelle's whole post(It's that good). If you want to read my take, keep going...

I did not watch Hardball tonight, but I read the transcript from the show, and Chris Matthews is insane. That is the only way to describe it. Reading the spittle-flecked transcript the first thing that comes to mind is that Matthews is a) a first class prick who lets his ideology cloud his thinking, and b) should be fired forthwith. Here is one of Chris the Mad's more lucid exchanges:

MATTHEWS: I'll tell you what. You have involved yourself in a presidential election. Let me ask you this.

THURLOW: Yes, I have.
MATTHEWS: Is John Kerry's war record a legitimate issue in this presidential campaign?
THURLOW: I think it is because he's made it the central plank of his run for nomination.
MATTHEWS: Fair enough. Then should the president have a legitimate right, should he choose to do so, to talk about it?
THURLOW: Should the president?
MATTHEWS: Should the president of the United States, who's running against John Kerry, have the—does he have the right, as we speak, as you see it, to raise this issue in debate, if it comes up?
THURLOW: Does the president...
MATTHEWS: Is he allowed to talk about it?
THURLOW: You talking about President Bush?
MATTHEWS: That's right.
THURLOW: Does he have the right to bring it up?
MATTHEWS: Yes.
THURLOW: President Bush wasn't there. So why would he bring it up?
THURLOW: No, no. I'm talking about, is he allowed to raise what you've said about your fellow officer? Is he allowed to go into the debate and say, I hear from your fellow officers that you were not the hero you claim to be? Is that a fair enough tack for the president to take in this campaign? Is it a legitimate issue? You're raising it as a campaign issue. I'm asking you, if it's a campaign issue, why can't both candidates talk about it? That's all I'm asking.
THURLOW: No, I'm not—I'm raising the campaign—the reason I've raised this issue is because I want the American people to hear the truth that I know...
MATTHEWS: Right, but you're...
THURLOW: ... and then let them make a decision.
MATTHEWS: But isn't it fair to say you're doing this because John Kerry is a candidate for president?
THURLOW: Yes.
MATTHEWS: OK.
THURLOW: This is the first time I would have ever had a chance to vote for him.
MATTHEWS: Well, of course. Of course. That's fair enough. But is it fair enough for the president to counter-charge and say he doesn't believe John Kerry's the hero he claimed to be at the Democratic convention?
THURLOW: I don't think so because he wasn't there. He doesn't have the evidence I do.
MATTHEWS: Is he allowed to believe you?
THURLOW: He's allowed to believe whoever he wants.
MATTHEWS: In other words, you want everybody in the country...
THURLOW: He's an American citizen.
MATTHEWS: ... to believe what you're saying right now, Mr. Thurlow...
THURLOW: Certainly.
MATTHEWS: ... but not to let the president of the United States count on it as a campaign issue.
THURLOW: That's entirely up to him. I'm telling you...
MATTHEWS: Oh, it is up to him. OK. I'm (UNINTELLIGIBLE) Why do you think it's OK for a person who didn't serve in Vietnam to criticize someone who did?
THURLOW: I did serve in Vietnam.
MATTHEWS: I'm asking you about the president. You said it's up to him. If it's up to the president whether to attack John Kerry for being in Vietnam, what did he over there, is it OK with you, that a guy who didn't serve criticizes a guy who did?
THURLOW: Well, I don't know that he has criticized...
MATTHEWS: As a veteran.
THURLOW: As a veteran?
MATTHEWS: I'm just asking you a simple question. Is this a campaign issue for both candidates to contend with or isn't it?
THURLOW: Well, it's a campaign...
MATTHEWS: Or is it just you against John Kerry as a side shot at one of the candidates?
THURLOW: ... issue that John Kerry ran out there. And the thing I think is that the president wouldn't have any—you know, what would he base...
MATTHEWS: OK, let me ask you this...
THURLOW: ... the statements on?
MATTHEWS: ... very simply. If President Bush the other—is asked a question, he come out and says, Well, I hear from this fellow officer, in fact, he was the commander of the swift boat, the head of the team—he says this guy didn't deserve all the acclaim he got at the convention. Would that be OK with you?
THURLOW: Well, it would be OK with me if he wanted to do it, but why would he want to do it?
MATTHEWS: To defeat his opponent.
THURLOW: He's got—he's got...
MATTHEWS: The same reason you want to defeat this guy. You don't think he should be president.
THURLOW: Well—that's exactly right. I don't think he should be president.
MATTHEWS: Well, that's fair enough. There's nothing wrong with it. Say it—you have a million times in this country a free opportunity to say so. I'm asking you...
THURLOW: You're—you're exactly right.
MATTHEWS: ... should George Bush be allowed to raise this issue in the campaign?
THURLOW: If he wants to, he...
MATTHEWS: Otherwise, it's just you.
THURLOW: ... certainly should be able to.
MATTHEWS: In other words, it's OK, for you, for a guy who didn't serve in Vietnam to attack a guy who did? That's all I want to know.
THURLOW: Well, I don't think a guy that didn't serve in Vietnam should attack some guy's record that did serve in Vietnam, if he has no personal knowledge of it.
MATTHEWS: But if he has the knowledge because of you, should he be able to do it?
THURLOW: He has no personal knowledge. He's...
MATTHEWS: OK.
THURLOW: What my—what I feel...
MATTHEWS: OK, we're going back to your personal knowledge, sir.
THURLOW: ... on him is he hasn't...
MATTHEWS: The problem is, you haven't produced any personal knowledge about this plan you talked about, Mr. Thurlow, and that's the problem tonight.
THURLOW: No, what I—what I...
MATTHEWS: This plan has not been authenticated. That's the concern I have. Anyway, thanks for coming on.

In other words, Chris Matthews spends about half the segment asking one of the Swift Vets what President Bush should do in his campaign. He spends the other half impugning his credibility, rhetorically banging on him like a rabid defense attorney on speed, but doesn't even attempt to actually ask a question about what Thurlow actually knows. He acts as if he were Lanny Davis and he is actually being paid by MSNBC to waste an hour of time on this dreck.

The Second Part of the show had Michele Malkin on, and here, Matthews completely loses it. Michelle has some great points about what happens during the commercial breaks in the show.

In a pre-interview, the producer goes over general questions about Kerry's response to the Swift Boat vets, whether the charges will be an issue in the presidential debates, and the basic themes of my book and its implications for the current War on Terror. I am originally scheduled to be on with the Washington Post's Dana Milbank. This was scratched and I am informed at the last minute that the other guest will be former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown.

As I am seated at the table with Matthews, who I am meeting for the first time, he cracks a joke--and not in a well-meaning way--about how I look. (There are quite a few people who are hung up on this.) "Are you sure you are old enough to be on the show? What are you? 28?" I grit my teeth. He badgers me again with the same question. I politely answer his question and supply my age.

(I wonder how Matthews' wife, the respected TV journalist Kathleen Matthews, who hosts a show about working women, would react if informed about her husband's treatment of a fellow female journalist. I've been in the business a dozen years and would be happy to talk to Mrs. Matthews about my firsthand experience with Neanderthal chauvinism in the workplace.)

Read the whole thing. Later on, Michele winds up being on the receiving end of Chris Matthews minus his meds:

Matthews frantically stuffed words down my mouth when I raised these allegations made in Unfit for Command that Kerry's wounds might have been self-inflicted. In his ill-informed and ideologically warped mind, this transmogrified into me accusing Kerry of "shooting himself on purpose" to get an award.

Here is the exchange:

MATTHEWS: What do you mean by self-inflicted? Are you saying he shot himself on purpose? Is that what you're saying?
MALKIN: Did you read the book...
MATTHEWS: I'm asking a simple question. Are you saying that he shot himself on purpose.
MALKIN: I'm saying some of these soldiers...
MATTHEWS: And I'm asking question.
MALKIN: And I'm answering it.
MATTHEWS: Did he shoot himself on purpose.
MALKIN: Some of the soldiers have made allegations that these were self-inflicted wounds.
MATTHEWS: No one has ever accused him of shooting himself on purpose.
MALKIN: That these were self-inflicted wounds.
MATTHEWS: Your saying there are—he shot himself on purpose, that's a criminal act?
MALKIN: I'm saying that I've read the book and some of the...
(CROSSTALK)
MATTHEWS: I want an answer yes or no, Michelle.
MALKIN: Some of the veterans say...
MATTHEWS: No. No one has every accused him of shooting himself on purpose.
MALKIN: Yes. Some of them say that.
MATTHEWS: Tell me where that...
MALKIN: Self-inflicted wounds—in February, 1969.
MATTHEWS: This is not a show for this kind of talk. Are you accusing him of shooting himself on purpose to avoid combat or to get credit?
MALKIN: I'm saying that's what some of these...
MATTHEWS: Give me a name.
MALKIN: Patrick Runyan (ph) and William Zeldonaz (ph).
MATTHEWS: They said—Patrick Runyan...
MALKIN: These people have...
MATTHEWS: And they said he shot himself on purpose to avoid combat or take credit for a wound?
MALKIN: These people have cast a lot of doubt on whether or not...
MATTHEWS: That's cast a lot of doubt. That's complete nonsense.
MALKIN: Did you read the section in the book...
MATTHEWS: I want a statement from you on this program, say to me right, that you believe he shot himself to get credit for a purpose of heart.
MALKIN: I'm not sure. I'm saying...
MATTHEWS: Why did you say?
MALKIN: I'm talking about what's in the book.
MATTHEWS: What is in the book. Is there—is there a direct accusation in any book you've ever read in your life that says John Kerry ever shot himself on purpose to get credit for a purple heart? On purpose?
MALKIN: On.
MATTHEWS: On purpose? Yes or no, Michelle.
MALKIN: In the February 1969 -- in the February 1969 event.
MATTHEWS: Did he say on it purpose.
MALKIN: There are doubts about whether or not it was intense rifle fire or not. And I wish you would ask these questions of John Kerry instead of me.
MATTHEWS: I have never heard anyone say he shot himself on purpose. I haven't heard you say it.
MALKIN: Have you tried to ask—have you tried ask John Kerry these questions?
MATTHEWS: If he shot himself on purpose. No. I have not asked him that.
MALKIN: Don't you wonder?
MATTHEWS: No, I don't. It's never occurred to me.

Note how Matthews doesn't even address the charges in the book, and at the end, admits that he hasn't even talked to the Kerry campaign about the charges in the book either. What kind of idiot network lets a show get put on by someone so bleeping ignorant that he won't even read the book that outlines the charges? Not only that, I haven't read the book yet, and it is pretty apparent to me that "self-inflicted" doesn't necessarily mean "on purpose". Yet Matthews doesn't even want to touch that. And here's another thing I noticed, or more correctly noticed after listening to Laura Ingraham bring it up.(She has a real good radio show on between 8 and 10 pm on WABC, kind of a Female Hannity, but more hip). Matthews does not let guests who disagree with his worldview speak. If you browse the transcript, one thing leaps out at you. Matthews interrupts conservative guests nearly continuously. Thurlow barely manages to get five syllables out before Matthews cuts him off. Michelle Malkin is never allowed to finish a sentence. Yet, on the other hand, Max Cleland manages to get whole paragraphs out, as does Willie Brown, and every other member of the liberal left.

The really disgusting thing about this is not that Matthews is such an enormous prick. What is really disgusting is that only a few months ago, left wing bias in the press was mainly due to groupthink. Since everyone in the office was a liberal, conservative stories never showed up. Now, with press corps' overt hatred of George Bush and the blatantly unaddressed allegations by the swift boat vets, that is no longer the case. It is now an overt bias, or even a silent conspiracy. Inconvenient facts about John Kerry will not be reported by the Press, no matter how important or central to his character. . Anything that makes George Bush look bad will be reported by the press, no matter how insignificant or tangential. The difference is now, it is no longer an unconscious action. It is conscious, and willful, and deliberate. They know they are supressing an important story and they don't care.

One final point, in case anyone wants to make a phone call to MSNBC and let the execs know exactly how you feel. The name of the producer for Hardball is Dominic Bellone. The number for NBC News Washington Bureau is (703) 549-6591. Chris Matthews line is 202-885-4600, and the email address is hardball@msnbc.com. When you call/email, be polite(no profanity/threats), but be firm, and ask the following question:

Did Chris Matthews or any of the staff of Hardballread any of the book Unfit for Command before going on the air to discuss the allegations put forth by the Swift Vets? Did Chris Matthews or any of the staff of Hardball get a response from the Kerry campaign about the allegations in the book?

I was just going to get a few quick blog posts in before going to bed, but after reading the transcript(and knowing Matthews' previous history, it may have changed from what I have posted to what you see on the link), and Michele's post, I have come to one absolute, and irrevocable conclusion.

Chris Matthews is an incompetent ahole.

Update: I found the link where the transcript was modified. The Puppy Blender had it. He was probably hiding it from me on purpose[Filthy Lie--Ed.]

Sometimes I wish that I watched MSNBC's Hardball regularly so that I could assess the show for myself. Michelle Malkin recently appeared on that show and, by all accounts, got rough treatment. Having not watched the show myself, I find the d

I have always admired Michelle and her intelligence. She needs to have this aired so all of Aamerica can see how people that do not think like him are treated. Great work. Great read.

While I agree that Matthews went over the top gonzo in the segment with Michelle Malkin, the Thurlow part, especially when seen visually, seems to still be in bounds per se.

He really was putting words in her mouth (or trying ) but Thurlow did say the bizarre things attributed to him and is the one who started down the primrose path. Much of his statements and writings have severe credibility problems.

I'll admit that I, like McCain have felt like most of the Swift Boat stuff has been a total load of BS, it is good to see the shift to Kerry's congressional testimony. The good Senator has some 'splaining to do on THAT topic!

Posted by: Roger at August 21, 2004 10:20 PM

Not in the exchange I posted. Matthews starts grilling Thurlow about George Bush's motives. Exactly what does Thurlow know about GWB? Thurlow states that Kerry had a "plan" to get out of combat duty in vietnam, which was a supposition on Thurlow's part, but, given that a)Kerry hasn't released all his military records, and b) that there are 60+ witnesses who either served with were Kerry's immediate commanders, all of whom strongly dispute the facts of Kerry's service in Vietnam, and c) his 8mm film of his time in Vietnam, it has some plausibility to it.

The only way to convince me that the Swift Vets are playing fast and loose with the truth is if Kerry released his full and complete military record. That would either confirm/deny the claim that the Swift vets make that Kerry wrote the after-action reports that were used to award him the medals he received. If those reports about receiving enemy fire were written by someone else, Kerry is vindicated. If they were written by Kerry, then the Swift Vets have made their point.

Update: What an idiot I am. What I posted sounds the exact opposite of what I meant to say. Anyway, it's fixed now

You're exactly right. i didn't see the show but as I read the transcript it was clear that in lawyer terms matthews "leads" the witnesses he likes and badgers those he doesn't like (Malkin). The Cleland thing really amazed me as it was almost like Cleland was an idiot who had to be prompted by Matthews to hit the right talking points.
