Kerry Flopsweat Alert

We've had Bush Blowout alerts, Bush Coattails alerts, but now, we are going to add another alert--the Kerry Flopsweat Alert. The first two are pretty explanatory, but the second one requires some explanation.

Whenever the Kerry campaign makes a move that indicates they realize that they are losing, and losing badly, I'll be posting a Kerry Flopsweat Alert. Like today, for example:

Furious Kerry orders shakeup

Sen. John Kerry is angry at the way his campaign has botched the attacks from the Swift boat veterans and has ordered a staff shakeup that will put former Clinton aides in top positions.

"The candidate is furious," a longtime senior Kerry adviser told the Daily News. "He knows the campaign was wrong. He wanted to go after the Swift boat attacks, but his top aides said no."

Campaign sources stressed that no one is losing a job at this point, but instead "proven winners" like former Clinton aides Joe Lockhart and Joel Johnson are being brought in to try to regain momentum for Team Kerry.

Many Democrats have suggested that an overhaul of the Kerry "message machine" is seriously overdue.

Johnson is now running Kerry's war room, and Lockhart will be both a spokesman and strategist.

Here's the deal. The only way Kerry could have fixed the damage the Swiftvets have caused was by a)renouncing what he did back in the '71, b)Releasing all his military records(signing form SF-180) and c)not using his Vietnam record as the centerpiece of the campaign.

As it is, it is too late to do anything about running away from his Vietnam record. He peppered every sentence with "When I was in Vietnam," so now that his military record is being questioned, he can't say it was too late, or inappropriate, etc. He made Vietnam the issue himself. What is amazing is neither Kerry, nor a single one of his advisors brought up the point that maybe focusing on Vietnam wasn't exactly a good idea. What is even more amazing is that what the allegations put forward by the Swift Vets aren't even all that new. Everything that was brought up by the Swift Vets was on the record five months ago, a year ago, and, in the case of Kerry's claims of war crimes by Vietnam Vets, was documented on tape before the Senate and on the Dick Cavett Show. All this was out there for the public to see, and noone came up with a strategy to minimize the damage of those charges. What were they thinking?

It may be that even releasing the military records may prove little help as well. If the Swiftvets ads been completely bogus, or even more than half bogus, releasing the records may have salvaged some of Kerry's credibility, had Kerry been savvy enough not to make Vietnam an issue. Now, unless those records, and the diaries, absolutely confirm Kerry's own biography, it may make things worse, as reporters and bloggers(mainly the latter) pick apart his war records the way they picked over the Swift Vets allegations.

Which brings us to apologizing for what he did. It is even too late for that. Had Kerry, back in March/April/May made an attempt to repudiate the leftist moonbats that are currently populating the area around Penn Station, he might have been able to apologize for his activities as part of VVAW, but now, it is too late. Any apology he makes will come across as not heartfelt, not authentic, and only a ploy to avoid further scrutiny. He embraced the anti-war left as a way to beat Howard Dean, and now the anti-war left is a boat anchor around his neck, and the Swift Vets have tossed the anchor overboard.
