What's the Word Processor Kenneth?

I'm pretty late to the party, but Powerline(it's been drudged, so good luck getting there), Little Green Footballs(two links), RatherBiased (via SSDB), Captains Quarters, and INDC Journal, Allah, and, by now, along with a zillion others, have noted that there is, in the words of INDC, a 90% probability that the damning memos that were cited in the CBS 60 minutes II report are fake.

Along with everyone else, I tried to make my own versions of the documents:

The first thing that comes to mind is the printing. The proportional fonts, the properly done superscript, all point to the sort of typewriter that simply wasn't commonly available in 1972. When I was in elementary school, my dad purchased an IBM Selectric. At the time, the Selectric was quite simply the best typewriter on the market sold by anyone anywhere. I learned to touch type on a selectric, and ours gave excellent service for 13 years(at least). But it couldn't do proportional type. The only models of selectric that could do proportional type were the Selectric Composer, and the Magnetic Tape Selectric(both here), neither of which were exactly commonplace.

The second thing is the font. Writing the memo in word using Times New Roman generates a character for character match with the memo. Charles Johnson was even able to overlay his MS Word copy over the CBS memo. That's more than a little odd, given that the CBS memo was originally written in 1972.

Overall, and I would be willing to risk a libel suit on this, is that if these memos are the originals that CBS is alleging that they are, then the memos are forgeries. No typewriter in 1972 could have written these memos. Noone could have written this memo in 1972 unless they had access to professional typesetting machines, and professional typesetting machines were not exactly things one would find in the typical National Guard Armory.

Frankly, I can only come to one conclusion. CBS, either knowingly or unknowingly, has propagated a lie by publishing these documents. Given how obviously these documents are different from what one would typically find on a typewriter in 1972, CBS, at minimum, has been woefully derelict in their journalistic duty.
