First response from an affiliate

Here is my first response from an affiliate, by Susan Loyd VP and GM of WTEV-47 in Jacksonville:

Dear Mr. Bono:

Thanks so much for your e-mail. We appreciate hearing from viewers because your feedback helps to make our stations better.

It is rare that I pass the buck, but I must forward your e-mail to our contacts at the CBS network. Although we are both a CBS and a FOX affiliate, we are not owned or operated by that either company. Both WTEV and WAWS are owned by Clear Channel Worldwide out of San Antonio, Texas. We have a business partnership with CBS and FOX; each that separates our newsrooms completely. We do not have control over network editorial content, nor do the networks in anyway influence our local coverage of news and information. Granted they offer feeds to us, but we make our choices based on local perspectives. These TV stations are locally managed.

Although we greatly value this network partnerships, and are pleased to offer local audiences the vast variety of quality entertainment and informational programming that CBS and FOX afford, in no way do we influence what network content is. It is our hope that by providing a vast array of news and information, viewers can make their own decisions on political matters. If you look at our local programming schedule, you will see that we offer a broad scope of programming from a variety of sources, and are committed to providing more than thirty hours a week of local news content.

I will forward your note to my contacts at CBS. Please know that we appreciate the feedback, and do what we locally can to provide a balanced and informed perspective on local and national news.

It's standard public relationsy type stuff. Granted, they are forwarding the issue up the line, but because they are not a mom & pop station, breaking publicly with CBS might have to be pushed up the corporate ladder, which brings me to my next point.

Seven CBS affiliates are owned by Clear Channel Communications. Escalating the issue to Clear Channel may help to push the issue forward to CBS. Here is the contact page. My guess is that you should contact either investor relations(if you are a stockholder) or external communications. Be polite, but be firm Ask Clear Channel to take a stand as a company on the issue. We need to escalate pressure on CBS to do the right thing, and by contacting Clear Channel, we put pressure on the affiliate GMs both from above(Clear Channel Corporate), and below(viewers/complaints). That will make increase the incentive for those affiliates to publicly split from CBS News, and at least one affiliate or group of affiliates to split publicly will get the ball rolling on all of them. I think they want to go public, but doing so is a risky endeavor for them unless they realize they reflecting the wishes of their viewers.
