How Environmentalists see the rest of us

I occasionally surf over to Daryl Cagle's Cartoon weblog to see some of the more recent editorial cartoons. I go there today, and I see this cartoon by Eric Lewis

Take a look at the cartoon. In Eric Lewis' eyes, mankind is an infestation, and to the modern environmental movement, his view is hardly out of the mainstream. The problem isn't the environment. It never was about the environment. The problem is humanity. To the modern environmentalist, Soylent Green is always just 10 years away, and if all you ugly people, with your dreams of a house, a car, and comfortable life would all just die off, then everything would be fine, and Gaia would be free of your consuming pestilence. Of course, if you are so poor that you are at risk of death by starvation, then you are an indigenous people, worthy of preservation. Be warned, however. The moment you think about something made by Nike or Starbucks, you immediately turn into one of the pestilential people infesting the planet.
